The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate—Discoveries from A Secret World

In The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben shares his deep love of woods and forests and explains the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland and the amazing scientific processes behind the wonders of which we are blissfully unaware. Much like human families, tree parents live together with their children, communicate with them, and support them as they grow, sharing nutrients with those who are sick or struggling and creating an ecosystem that mitigates the impact of extremes of heat and cold for the whole group. As a result of such interactions, trees in a family or community are protected and can live to be very old. In contrast, solitary trees, like street kids, have a tough time of it and in most cases die much earlier than those in a group.

Drawing on groundbreaking new discoveries, Wohlleben presents the science behind the secret and previously unknown life of trees and their communication abilities; he describes how these discoveries have informed his own practices in the forest around him. As he says, a happy forest is a healthy forest, and he believes that eco-friendly practices not only are economically sustainable but also benefit the health of our planet and the mental and physical health of all who live on Earth.

News of the World

National Book Award FinalistFiction

In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.

In the wake of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence.

In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.

Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forming a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.

Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself.

An Amazon Best Book of October 2016: I’ll admit, Paulette Jiles’s News of the World was not at the top of my to-read pile. It’s a post-Civil War western, the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and you can be sure the former will ride off into the sunset at the story’s end (Womp, Womp). But, what is wrong with that, you say? As it turns out, not a darn thing. Captain Jefferson Kyle is a war-weary widower, traveling from town to town reading relevant bits of news to paying customers. In one such town he is given a $50 dollar gold piece to ferry a kidnapped girl back to what’s left of her family–her parents and sister having been murdered by members of the Kiowa tribe–who spare the then 6-year-old and raise her as one of their own. Fast-forward four years and tribe life is the only life she knows, so she’s not about to go quietly with a stranger who doesn’t speak her language, whose motives she does not trust, and to a place that is not what she now considers home. Thus begins a seemingly ill-advised but transformative road trip where the mismatched pair eventually form and uneasy truce, then a not-so begrudging alliance, and finally something more wonderful that neither Captain nor kid could have imagined. Save for the carnage, this could be a great plot for Disney movie, and there is even a cinematic showdown thrown in for good measure. But in the complex world that we live in, sometimes it’s nice to know who is wearing the white hats, and who is wearing the black hats, and to root for someone who—out of a sense of duty, and later, love–is doing something pure and good. And that’s what News of the World is: Pure and good. –Erin Kodicek, The Amazon Book Review

Photography Demystified: Your Guide to the World of Travel Photography

Photography Demystified—Your Guide to the World of Travel Photography—How to Explore, See, and Photograph the World is a book written for those that love to travel, explore, adventure, and photograph.

Many photographers wanting to embark on a photographic adventure are not sure where exactly to begin. Often they find themselves asking not only photography technique questions but also seeking practical advice—How should I pack my gear? What’s the best way to take my cameras and equipment on an airplane safely? What about getting through security in a foreign country, how does that work? And other questions related to traveling and carrying photography equipment.

Photography Demystified—Your Guide to the World of Travel Photography—How to Explore, See, and Photograph the World is a dedicated to giving you practical advice, so you can get the most out of your travel photography experience. This book will help you and your gear get to your destination/s practically and safely. I present what I have learned through years of travel and leading photographic tours. Additionally, the travel photographer will receive specific insight into creating photographs of their travels that are both stunning and captivating, in terms of the stories they tell.

Along with my wife, Ally, I own McKay Photography Academy. I have taught over 12 thousand people, just like you, photography. For the past five years, I have also led hundreds of beginning photographers and photo enthusiasts on photographic tours around the world—to Cuba, Europe, Tanzania, and Iceland—among many other places. With that experience, I am able to bring you knowledge that sometimes I have had to learn the hard way. These insights alone will save you hours of frustration and will help to make sure your photographic travel experiences live up to everything you dream of.

Having earned the titles of Master of Photography and Master of Photographic Craftsmen from Professional Photographers of America, the leading photography organization in the world, I have been a full-time professional photographer for over twenty-nine years and am passionate about teaching others how to achieve great results in their photography. My heart’s aim is to see that everyone can enjoy photography and to take the frustration out of the process!

The photographic education, tips, and travel knowledge you are about to read are proven methods to help people create the finest photographs of their travels. Take control of your photographic journey right now, make it productive, and enjoy the results of capturing the travel photographs you always dreamed of.

For those that have not yet read my first two international best-selling books in the Photography Demystified series, I would highly recommend doing so, unless you already have a firm grasp of manual settings and an understanding of light. Even if you do, I believe there is some valuable information for everyone and all levels of photographers in those first two books.

While my first two books are by no means required in order to enjoy and gain valuable knowledge from this book, you will get the most out of this third book in the series, and in your travel photography, by understanding how to use manual settings on your camera system as well as other aspects of photography, such as working with light, that are foundational to creating amazing photographs. These are all taught in my first book Photography Demystified—Your Guide to Gaining Creative Control and Taking Amazing Photographs.

It is my sincere hope that after reading this book as well as my others, you once again feel my passion for travel and photography, become more confident in your abilities, and are ready more than ever before to create amazing photographs of your journey!

Management: Achieve Management Excellence & World Class Leadership Skills In 7 Simple Steps (Business Mastery)

NOW INCLUDES A BONUS FREE BOOK!

Learn The Simple Secrets To Becoming A World Class Manager And Great Leader!

FREE book, “Connect – Simple Steps to Instant Likability, Rapport, and a Great First Impression” included with your purchase!

In the corporate world, the job title of ‘manager’ carries with it prestige and authority, but it also comes along with enormous responsibilities. It is a loaded job title; any individual placed in such a position bears the burden of seeing to it that people under his or her charge are mobilized to not only be productive, but also have their capabilities optimized and their potential realized. But that’s not even the half of it; managers are also entrusted with the task of solving all sorts of problems in the workplace and diffusing conflict among team members, all for the sake of ensuring harmony within the team under one’s charge, so that productivity will not be interrupted.

Considering the manager’s role in a corporate culture, one has to wonder, how can a person become a more effective manager? The truth is, good management is an art form that can only be mastered by being observant, insightful and learning from trial-and-error. This is due to the fact that the bulk of managers’ responsibilities consist of dealing with the most unpredictable and complex aspect of business operations: human character. As ironic as it may seem, the greatest challenge managers have to face has less to do with upholding company policies and delegating tasks, but more to do with the various personality quirks, working habits and egos of people under their charge.

In this book, we will look at how to achieve management excellence and world class leadership skills in just 7 simple steps! In these 7 steps we’ll look more closely at a plethora of ideas in order to shed light on:

  • Understanding Management In The Modern World
  • The Keys Principles To Being An Effective Manager
  • Moving Beyond Simply Being Effective – From Good To GREAT!
  • How To Deal With Problems Without The Drama
  • The Most Common Mistakes Managers Make & How You Can Avoid Them
  • The Value Of Assessing Your Own Strengths & Weaknesses – Includes Self Evaluation Exercise!
  • The Importance Of Learning From The Greats – Inspiring Quotes From Management Masters!

You will see that becoming an effective manager is not so much a question of natural ability, but rather it comes about by following a simple set of rules and by holding the right mindset. Once you understand these core principles you can begin to incorporate them into your own lives, and over time they will undoubtedly go a long way in helping you become not only an effective manager, but a world class leader.
