Node.js, MongoDB and Angular Web Development: The definitive guide to using the MEAN stack to build web applications (2nd Edition) (Developer’s Library)

Node.js, MongoDB and Angular Web Development

The definitive guide to using the MEAN stack to build web applications

Node.js is a leading server-side programming environment, MongoDB is the most popular NoSQL database, and Angular is the leading framework for MVC-based front-end development. Together, they provide an easy-to-implement, fully integrated web development stack that allows web programmers to create high-performance sites and applications built completely in JavaScript, from server to client.

Updated for Angular 2, Angular 4, and subsequent versions, this new edition of Node.js, MongoDB and Angular Web Development shows you how to integrate these three technologies into complete working solutions. It begins with concise, crystal-clear tutorials on each technology and then quickly moves on to building common web applications.

You’ll learn how to use Node.js and MongoDB to build more scalable, high-performance sites, how to leverage Angular’s innovative MVC approach to structure more effective pages and applications, and how to use all three together to deliver outstanding next-generation Web solutions.

  • Implement a highly scalable and dynamic web server using Node.js and Express
  • Implement a MongoDB data store for your web applications
  • Access and interact with MongoDB from Node.js JavaScript code

Cross-platform Desktop Application Development: Electron, Node, NW.js, and React

Key Features

  • Build different cross-platform HTML5 desktop applications right from planning, designing, and deployment to enhancement, testing, and delivery
  • Forget the pain of cross-platform compatibility and build efficient apps that can be easily deployed on different platforms.
  • Build simple to advanced HTML5 desktop apps, by integrating them with other popular frameworks and libraries such as Electron, Node.JS, Nw.js, React, Redux, and TypeScript

Book Description

Building and maintaining cross-platform desktop applications with native languages isn’t a trivial task. Since it’s hard to simulate on a foreign platform, packaging and distribution can be quite platform-specific and testing cross-platform apps is pretty complicated. In such scenarios, web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript can be your lifesaver. HTML5 desktop applications can be distributed across different platforms (Window, MacOS, and Linux) without any modifications to the code.

The book starts with a walk-through on building a simple file explorer from scratch powered by NW.JS. So you will practice the most exciting features of bleeding edge CSS and JavaScript. In addition you will learn to use the desktop environment integration API, source code protection, packaging, and auto-updating with NW.JS.

As the second application you will build a chat-system example implemented with Electron and React. While developing the chat app, you will get Photonkit. Next, you will create a screen capturer with NW.JS, React, and Redux.

Finally, you will examine an RSS-reader built with TypeScript, React, Redux, and Electron. Generic UI components will be reused from the React MDL library. By the end of the book, you will have built four desktop apps. You will have covered everything from planning, designing, and development to the enhancement, testing, and delivery of these apps.

What you will learn

  • Plan, design, and develop different cross-platform desktop apps
  • Application architecture with React and local state
  • Application architecture with React and Redux store
  • Code design with TypeScript interfaces and specialized types
  • CSS and component libraries such as Photonkit, Material UI, and React MDL
  • HTML5 APIs such as desktop notifications, WebSockets, WebRTC, and others
  • Desktop environment integration APIs of NW.js and Electron
  • Package and distribute for NW.JS and Electron

The Management Skills Builder: Self-Directed Learning Strategies for Career Development

Talent, knowledge, and hard work do not guarantee success in a managerial or professional career. Competent, knowledgeable, and hardworking people often have less impact and achieve less career success than they deserve. Sometimes the missing ingredient for success is a set of fundamental skills, skills that give talent, knowledge, and hard work leverage and visibility.

The body of knowledge to be mastered in a technical or professional education leaves little or no time for the acquisition of skills that cut across disciplinary boundaries. Used in all fields, these generic skills are vital to the careers of many managers and professionals. The manager and professional who can write efficiently and well; who is an effective and willing public speaker; who can interview effectively; who can and does relate effectively with others; who is personally able to use a computer; and who can tap into the burgeoning volume of information with some precision, has greater probability of success than one who cannot or does not. The Management Skills Builder is intended to increase awareness of the need for these skills among intelligent and dedicated professionals and to suggest ideas about how these skills may be acquired, further developed, and honed. Strategies for the development of each skill are provided, along with a resource list that includes recommended books, videos, and other learning aids.

Managing risk – a practical guide (Skills development)

If we know for certain that something is going to happen, it has no risk attached to it. Should there be an element of uncertainty surrounding it, then risk(s) will exist. Risk can encompass both positive and negative outcomes that may have an impact on the ability of a business or organisation to fulfil its objectives.

The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the key concepts of risk management. It also provides guidance on how the risk management process can be practically applied at an operational level within an organisation. It outlines how managers can identify risks and apply established processes to manage those risks.

This book was written in Australia and therefore (occasionally) refers to Australian laws, systems and workplace requirements. These should be used as a guide to similar types of legislation and organisational expectations that may apply in other countries. The book is structured around the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 Risk management – principles and guidelines, but the principles and processes that are described are globally applicable.

Managing risk – a practical guide is a component of the Skills development series of books.
